What should my pet first aid kit include?

2 Nov 2020 by Vetsmiths

Being prepared with a first aid kit for your pet is a great idea.

We recommend every pet owner has one – these can be purchased on-line, or just as easily put together yourself with the basics needed.

It’s also a good idea to have a smaller kit in your car ready to provide any care needed whilst out and about.  Also good for helping out other pet owners if they don’t have one themselves.

Here’s our recommendations for a basic first aid kit:

  • Bandages
  • Blunt-ended scissors
  • Wound wash
  • Cotton wool
  • Tweezers
  • Tick tweezers
  • Wound dressing
  • Self-adhesive tape
  • Dressings
  • Vinyl gloves
  • Foil blanket
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • A blanket to use as a stretcher

If your pet needs first aid or you find yourself in an emergency situation, try to remain calm – our pets pick up on our vibes and so can easily become stressed, agitated and even aggressive during times of pain.

Once you have administered the basic first aid necessary, we recommend contacting your vet for advice.  They will then make a full assessment of the injury or illness and advise whether it is necessary for them to see your pet.
